One thing you could try is a pinned post (or similar) that greets new members when they go to make their first post that says something along the lines of:

I don't know how big was this thing, but disable registrations for some days/a week can be a solution, or maybe moderate the first 10/15 posts for new members. This can slowdown the problem on you ...
